2011 AWARDS LUNCHEON

During his decade on the California Supreme Court, Justice Moreno has made important contributions in many areas of the law, including arbitration, class actions, civil rights, and custody matters. As chair of the California Blue Ribbon Commission on Children in Foster Care, Justice Moreno was responsible for sweeping reforms to the state's juvenile dependency court and child welfare system. The son of Mexican immigrants, Justice Moreno grew up in a working class Los Angeles neighborhood and was the first in his family to graduate from college. He received a B.A. in political science from Yale University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.OMM

O'Melveny & Myers LLP worked with ICLC on cases from three of ICLC's practice areas: Homeless Veterans, Homelessness Prevention, and Slum Housing in 2010. O'Melveny's assistance with ICLC's slum housing litigation was extraordinary. Under the leadership of attorney Paul Salvaty, O'Melveny & Myers attorneys expertly co-counseled not one, but two, of ICLC's affirmative habitability cases in 2010. Tenants in these buildings had suffered for years with roaches, rats, bedbugs, poor plumbing and little to no heat. Thanks to the hundreds of pro bono hours the O'Melveny & Myers team put in, these families have received life changing settlements, and they no longer have to live in unhealthy conditions. In all of their efforts, Paul Salvaty and the O'Me1veny team demonstrated supreme professionalism, an extraordinary willingness to take on complex and difficult matters, and an abiding commitment to pro bono representation of our clients.

The luncheon is one of Inner City Law Center’s single most important source of funds.  Last year, the luncheon raised over $300,000 to power the organization's work to ensure that the poorest among us have the same access to justice as the richest and most powerful.

2010 AWARDS LUNCHEON

Our 30th Anniversary Awards Luncheon, held on May 27, was an enormous success!  Our honorees, California Community Foundation President Antonia Hernández and Southern California Edison showcased their work protecting and expanding the rights of the most vulnerable members of our society. We are proud to report that the gala went absolutely smoothly, concluded on time, had record attendance, and raised over $300,000 to support our programs and services.

These last few years have been particularly difficult for our homeless and low-income clients.  Thanks to your support, ICLC has been able to meet some of the increased demand for our services.  Our budget has grown by almost 60% in the past three years.  In addition, last year alone, local law firms and lawyers provided more than $2 million in pro bono legal services for ICLC clientsa 10-fold increase from prior years.

Because of your support, more families will stay in their homes, more slumlords will repair their buildings, and more homeless veterans will get off the street. Your generosity will allow us to continue to advance our Award Imagemission of providing access to justice for the poorest and most vulnerable in Los Angeles.

On behalf of our staff and our clients, thank you.

Sincerely,

Adam Murray, Executive Director
