ADAM MURRAY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

On May 1, 2007 Adam Murray became the fourth Executive Director of Inner City Law Center. The Board of Directors is very excited to have someone of Adam’s caliber take the helm from Rebecca Isaacs, to whom we wish great success in her new position as head of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. The Board wishes to express its gratitude for the effective management of ICLC by the team of Betsy Handler, Brett Terrell, and Mike Stefanko in the months between Rebecca’s departure and Adam’s arrival.

Prior to joining ICLC, Adam was a litigator with the national law firm of Howrey LLP. Adam’s law practice focused on complex civil litigation, including unfair business practices, antitrust violations, breach of contract, insurance coverage, and intellectual property. During his time at Howrey, Adam was also involved in substantial pro bono housing and immigration cases, including the 2001 Rosales slum housing case, with Nancy Mintie and ICLC.

In addition to his law work, Adam has taught courses in economics and political science at East Los Angeles College. He sits on the board of the Pasadena chapter of the ACLU, and, until recently, served as the president of the boards of both the Housing Rights Center of Southern California and the Immigration Center for Women and Children. He is also a former board member of the Fair Housing Council of the San Gabriel Valley, and of the Center for Progressive Leadership, a national non-profit organization dedicated to training the next generation of progressive political leaders.

Adam received a B.A. in International Relations from Pomona College, an M.A. in economics from Claremont Graduate University, and a J.D. from Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law. Adam and his wife, Aman Thind, have two children, which may, at least for a while, decrease the amount of time they have to play soccer or hike in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Adam recognizes that as a legal organization headquartered on Skid Row and focused on the housing needs of poor people throughout Los Angeles County, ICLC is uniquely situated to confront issues of housing and homelessness. The Board believes that Adam is the ideal person to lead ICLC as we confront the ongoing challenges and needs of our clients who struggle with poverty and related issues. Adam has fit seamlessly into ICLC, and has been very well received by staff. These are exciting times for ICLC, and we hope our friends will continue to support us as we embark on the next chapter of our work.

Tom Freiberg,
Former President, Board of Directors
